A web site that allows a person to search for other sites of interest.

Promoting your site in search engines is a very powerful way of increasing traffic.

Search engines can be divided into 3 main categories (some engines fall into more than one category):
  • Crawlers - automated software indexes your site, example Google.

  • Directories - a person visits and reviews your site, example dmoz.

  • Pay Per Click - you pay per click for each visitor you get from a particular search engine.
Although their are many search engines, it is not that important to be listed in most of them. It is more important to concentrate on the 20-30 leading search engines. Your strategy should include trying to get a good rank on the crawlers, trying to get listed in the directories, and using pay per click advertising.
