Internet Marketing Dictionary   >   CGI

CGI (abbreviation for Common Gateway Interface) is a standard way for a web server to pass information to an application program, and receive information back from the application program.

Normally, when a user access a web site, the web server will simply send back data (usually an HTML page) in response to the request, however if the data needs to be dynamic (for example, generated in response to a form), an application program will need to prepare this data.

CGI application programs can be written in a number of different programming languages, including C, C++, Java and Perl.

Not all web hosts provide CGI facilities.
